Proposed Dwelling Insurance Increase for Second Homes and Vacation Rental Units

 The NC Rate Bureau, the entity representing NC insurance companies, has filed for ANOTHER significant rate increase (39.6%) for dwelling insurance policies that cover wind damages to second homes and vacation rental units.  This requested increase is different and separate from a previously requested 25% - 40% increase for homeowners and condominium unit owners insurance that was requested by the Rate Bureau in late 2017, was initially denied by NC Insurance Commissioner Causey, and will be subject to further negotiations later in 2018. 

 ACTION on the new requested rate increase for second homes and vacation rental units is required TODAY, as the deadline for comments is at the end of business today (March 23). Please take a quick moment to email your comments to:

New Flood Maps Information

On February 28, 2018, FEMA notified the Town of Sunset Beach of the release and availability of the new preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) panels for the community. These FIRM panels will have an effective date of August 28, 2018. The Town has six (6) months to adopt the maps and update the Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance to reflect the new maps. There is a required notice and adoption process which must be followed. The Town may adopt the FIRM panels sooner than August 28, 2018, however, they will not be used for insurance purposes or development permitting until that date.

 2018 Evacuation Re-Entry Passes Available

The 2018 Evacuation re-entry passes are now available at Town Hall. The program has been revamped and some requirements have changed. Also, passes will be available for property management companies, businesses and contractors.   Spring Capital Projects Scheduled to Begin

Several roads and right of way projects may result in single lane closures and intermittent delays. The projects include the Sunset Blvd. South causeway repairs (February 19th), Cobia Street and North Shore Drive Extension paving (mid-March), bike paths, resurfacing and stormwater repairs on Sunset Blvd. North (mid-March), and the installation of the Living Shoreline at the Town Park (April). The Main Street Sidewalk project has been delayed until the fall of 2018 due to scheduling. The project will be completed before Christmas 2018.

Free Mulch

Free mulch is available to all residents and businesses from the Brunswick County Landfill. The landfill is located at 172 Landfill Rd. NE in Bolivia and the hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 8am until 4pm. 

 Beach Access Walkway Closed

The 12th Street Beach Access Walkway will be closed for repairs beginning Thursday, February 15, 2018. Please do not cross the barricades to access the walkway while the repairs are being made. 

 Neighborhood Watch Program

Police Chief Klamar held a Neighborhood Watch Program organizational meeting for the Sea Trail Neighborhood last night (January31st). We discussed goals for the program as well as communication methods. We would like to have more participation in this program. If you live in the Sea Trail/Oyster Bay area and want to be involved with the Neighborhood Watch, want to begin a program in your neighborhood or simply want more information, please contact Chief Klamar at 910-579-6297 Extension 1021.
Working in partnership with our community is one of the best ways to ensure everyone's safety.

 Prescription Medicine Drop Off Location

The drop box is in the foyer of Town Hall and is available for collections Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm while the building is open to the public.  If residents have unused/unwanted prescription medications and cannot make it to Town Hall before closing time, we can send an officer to your residence to pick the items up. Please note that we only accept prescription and over the counter medications.  We cannot accept any medications that contain any radioactive or chemotherapy medicine, syringes, or needles.
