Town of Sunset Beach Town Council Meeting
Land Development Regulations Update
The NC General Assembly is requiring all counties and municipalities to amend land use regulations to comply with NC General Statute 160D titled Local Planning and Development Regulations. Wes MacLeod, Cape Fear Council of Governments, assisted the Planning Board with the necessary amendments for the Sunset Beach UDO. During their November 5, 2020 Meeting, the Board voted unanimously to recommend to the Town Council amendments for Articles 1-4, 6-7, 11-13 and Appendix A. During the Town Council December 3, 2020 Meeting, the Council accepted the Planning Board recommendation and scheduled a Public Hearing for Monday, February 1, 2020. 2020/2021 Hydrant Flushing Schedule
The Fire Department crews test and flush hydrant monthly except during the summer months. Click here to determine in which month the hydrants in your area are being tested and flushed. If you notice discoloration or a muddy look to your water, running your water for a few minutes will clear it up.
Dredging Project Update
The CAMA Permit Modification Application to include the nearshore placement location for the beach compatible sand has been submitted to the NC Division of Coastal Management. Tanya Pietila, NC Department of Environmental Quality, NC Division of Coastal Management has notified the Town that the public comment period for the CAMA Permit Modification Application opened today and will end on October 26, 2020. Comments may be emailed to Curtis Weychert curt.weychert@ncdenr.gov.
Gregory Currey, US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has notified the Town that the public comment period for the USACE Dredging Permit Application opened today and will end on November 19, 2020. Rip Current Risk Warning System
Beach Patrol vehicles will display a rip current warning system utilizing red, yellow and green flags. Click here to view the flyer developed by Fire Department staff.

Update 09/12/2020 @ 1:30 PM
During the September 8, 2020 Council Meeting, the Town Council amended the State of Emergency. Click here to view the amended State of Emergency. The amendment includes the following:

Special events in the Town Park and within the Town limits are limited to a maximum of 25 people for an inside event and 50 people for an outside event. During any event, face masks are required and social distancing must be maintained. If the event is a concert, no food vendors will be allowed.

The Town Council will no longer accept public comments via email since a quorum of the Council is attending Meetings in person and the public is allowed to make comments from the Conference Room.

The public, business owners and employees are encouraged to wear a cloth mask or face covering when in public areas.

Rental Companies and private renters are encouraged to follow CDC guidelines when cleaning units.

Social Distancing requirements remain in effective until further notice.
Update - 03/20/2020 @ 1:40 PM (Specific to Contractors and the Inspection Department)
Due to COVID-19, all applications, plans and any other necessary materials, must be emailed to inspections@sunsetbeachnc.gov as no documentation will be taken in person. Inspection protocols have been developed with regard to on/off site inspections. Please click to view the protocols and the instructions for live remote inspection.
Crash Reports Available Online
Sunset Beach Police has partnered with Carfax to allow for easier access to accident reports. Accident reports can now be accessed online, 24/7, at www.crashdocs.org at no cost for the involved parties. This online portal allows for instant access to records that can be printed or emailed right from the website.
Notice to the Public: East End Emergency Beach Access
The Town is aware that the East End Emergency Beach Access easement has been obstructed by a private citizen declaring ownership of the land. The Town is investigating and seeking legal guidance on how to best address this situation. All citizens and members of the public are advised to avoid the emergency access area until this issue is resolved.
Smart Yards Guide
The North Carolina Coastal Federation has published the latest version of their "Smart Yards Guide". The guide includes simple do-it-yourself solutions for stormwater pollution and shoreline erosion such as rain gardens, rerouting downspouts, rain barrels, native landscaping and tree plantings, permeable paving, backyard wetlands and living shorelines. Free Mulch
Free mulch is available to all residents and businesses from the Brunswick County Landfill. The landfill is located at 172 Landfill Rd. NE in Bolivia and the hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 8am until 4pm.

Prescription Medicine Drop Off Location
A Prescription Medicine drop box is located in the Town Hall foyer. Town Hall hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Items not allowed in the medicine drop box include: needles, liquids of any kind and bottles. All prescription medications are to be placed in zip locked bags prior to depositing in the box. If residents have unused/unwanted prescription medications and cannot make it to Town Hall, an officer can come to your residence to pick the items up.
